Gray and Gold by John Rogers Cox is one of my favorite paintings.

I also like Jackson Pollack (my son is named after him), Vincent Van Gogh, George Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and what the heck -- Bob Ross.

Hi;
That could be a really long list... It depends on what period or kind of artist you are looking for... I mean you can have Renaissance artists, modern, post-modern, contemporary...
I'm assuming that since you already know some art, you at least know Renaissance and modern artists...
People call all art made after the 50's contemporary but some of it is post modern.
I love the abstract expressionist like: Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Jones.
Then you have the whole pop art movement where you have Roy Lichtenstein, Warhol, Claes Oldenburg.
Then the whole minimalism, post-minimalism, appropriation art, etc, happened.
And now to the contemporary ones... When I say contemporary I mean art from less than 10 or 15 years ago.
Here are some of my favorites...
You got the super popular movement now which is the Low Brow which some call Pop Surrealism, this is not considered fine art, what I mean by this is not yet considered “in the cannon" art; and you can find artists like: Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia, Todd Schorr, Elizabeth McGrath, Jeff Soto, among others.
Now I'm going to name a lot of artist whose work I think is inspirational and incredible... a mixture of painter, sculptor and people that do installations and performance art.

I was told by another artist that PBS did a series called Art21 and it shows a lot of contemporary artists.
I found the link for you
http://www.pbs.org/art21/series/seasonone/index.html
Also if you want to buy it aparently they have dvds and books that are in amazon.

What can also keep you aware of the new things that are happening is, try to go to as many gallery openings as you can in your town.
I hope this helps...
Take care

I love art too and I have many favorite artists, some of them are:
Leonardo da Vinci
Michelangelo Buonarotti
Sandro Botticelli
Pablo Picasso
Salvador Dali
Gustav Klimt
Vincent Van Gogh
Claude Monet
Wassily Kandinsky
Edward Munch
Oscar Kokoschka
Marc Chagall
Mihály Munkácsy
Paul Klee
Kosztka Tivadar Csontvári
Franz Mark
etc.

You should definitely be familiar with all of these, all were very influential, for example Monet was the father of impressionism in painting. And all had their own style. Who may not be so famous as the rest are Franz Mark, Csontváry, but it is good if you know them too.
Others whom you should look up:
Edouard Manet
Paul Gauguin
Diego Velasquez
Rembrandt van Rijn
Albrecht Dürer
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Rene Magritte

Hope I helped! To see paintings type any name I gave you in google images.
