If your Betta is in a bowl or a vase, no other fish can live with it. Other fish require filtration and oxygenated/clean water and most need a heater. If you have a 5 gallon tank with a filter and heater, you could get some Neon Tetras, but that is about it. In a bowl or vase, you could add some Ghost Shrimp, but they may or may not be eaten by the Betta. Be sure to avoid hyperactive, nippy fish, and fish that have long flowing fins. If kept together permanently, one will kill the other.
Goldfish get more than a foot long and will only last a month or two in a bowl. No Goldfish should be kept with Bettas.

EDIT: You cannot permanently keep male and female Bettas together. They should only be housed together for breeding purposes and they must first be properly conditioned to breed, and then can only be together for a couple hours at a time until they spawn.
EDIT 2: Most Plecos get about 2 feet long, so be sure to research each fish you plan to buy so you don't end up with a huge fish in a small tank.

If you would like to get a friend for you fish I would get another tank. Since you have a betta there really is no other fish that you can put in with them. They are siamese fighting fish and they will fight any other fish except when conditioned to breed. You can get like a 2.5 gallon fish tank at PetSmart that comes with a divider so you can put a fish on each side. I would suggest another betta though. They can see eachother trhough the divider but cannot get to eachother. I used to have a tank like that and they are easy to clean. They are great for that breed of fish.

Hi,
First off, every betta is different. Some will live well alongside other fish in a community tank. Others really don't like sharing their water AT ALL. In my experience, bettas that have been kept alone for any length of time are less likely to be good with other fish. Bettas are naturally very solitary creatures, so don't assume that your betta is lonely.
You don't say what kind of situation your betta is in. Is he in a tank, at least 10 gallons? Then you could probably add a couple small catfish, like cory cats. Just give them a sinking pellet every few days. Most bettas get along OK with bottom feeders, and cory cats have some armor that make it tough for a nippy betta to bother them much. If your tank is less than 10 gallons, I probably wouldn't add other fish. Cory cats want to be in groups - even two is awfully minimal. And even one betta is really too much for a bowl. You should move him to a larger tank - 5-10 gallons, with a filter and heater, as soon as you can get one.
If you have a large community tank, like a 30-50 gallon, again, some bettas will be fine in that kind of thing. Some others won't. You want to be sure not to have nippy fish like tiger barbs, danios, or things like that, as bettas move slowly and their long fins are awfully tempting. YOu also don't want to have related fish like gouramis, or fish with long fins like guppies, as bettas will treat them like other bettas (try to kill them). I had one betta that did OK in a community tank with cardinal tetras, amano shrimp, cory cats, and otos. Another wanted to attack anything that moved near him, so he went back to his own 10 gallon.
Ultimately, bettas don't NEED company. So the only reason to try it is if you want to keep a community tank and include your betta with the community. Even then, keep in mind that you may end up with two tanks to maintain.
EDIT: Absolutely do NOT put your betta in a bowl with a goldfish!!! Goldfish should never be in a bowl either. They need at least 10 gallons of water - they are hugely messy fish. And they like their water a LOT cooler than bettas do. They are NOT compatible fish on any level.

If your betta is in a bowl (without an air pump) you can only put a plain goldfish in it. Not a fancy! If your fish is in a tank with a filter or pump you can put any community fish in with it. I.e. tetras, female guppy, molly. Male bettas can't be with any fish that have long fins. The way they kill other fish is by swimming fast beside them and letting their long fins actually slice the other fish. While this usually doesn't kill the fish it does put it under stress which is what usually kills fish.
Good Luck.

If this is a male betta fish, then no good news... they are born to be a loner... Occasionally you may introduce a female betta... to cure its boredom.. but beware, you might end up with More Bettas :)

Whatever you do, do NOT get a boy fish for him. They will fight like crazy! Get a girl companion.
