I just found one in my drawer.
I can't remember the last time i used it, it's looking a bit rusty.
Do you still find use for it.
Oh and do you have one of those electric ones. haha. Do they still make them?
Is the kitchen gadget industry in turmoil?

Sorry maybe i was a tad unclear, up here in Scotland, the tins of beans, soup, etc, have RING PULLS. Therefore a tin opener is of no use to me.

Nancy, plum tomatoes aren't on my shopping list i'm affraid. And asda are in cahoots with the gadget brigade, they are funding this industry, to get more cash from us. Every aisle you walk up, there are gadgets hanging from the shelves, so much that you can't get near the bloody tins

Brunel, never had the carpet beater, although we did have a coal fire, and a threat to be locked in the coal bunker was mentioned once or twice. I used to hate collecting the coal, especially when the thing was near empty, all you could see were two skinny legs sticking out.

Roger they don't make em like that anymore.

Chloe, I fear they have got you in their grip. You hold tight girl, don't you let them brainwash you.
TIN OPENERS have seen their day, and re-naming them CAN openers doesn't fool me. I'm onto you ASDA, I know your game.

Miss P, did you have a tin opener to get yourself out? How did you aquire this piece of merchandise. Is Your sis in cahoots with ASDA.
There's treachery afoot.

Yep - I've got one of the "butterfly" ones - they're great! Don't like the electric ones - those are cr*p! Does anyone remember the ones you used to get when you went to the off-sales for a "cairry-oot" - the ones with the sort of triangular end for opening cans and a bit at the other end for opening bottles? Haven't seen one of those in years!

Studstrickle: Oooh!! So you don't by any Smart price stuff from the Asda then? Cos you need a tin opener for those. There's still tins of plum tomatoes, etc that need the old tin opener!

Brunelscooby: My mammy had one of those things. I can remember her lobbing carpets and the rest over the rope in the back green and smacking hell out of them! She used to give me a shot and I loved it - but it was knackering! Fortunately, we were never skelped with it - the threat was enough! lol!!

Yes one of the sort with a butterfly thing you turn. I agree most tins are ring pull, but small tins of garden peas from Tesco need an opener as do some makes of cat food . Also have a couple of tins of rice(pudding variety) that will need an opener also tins of butter beans .. Also a tinned steak and kidney pudding and a tin of stewed steak (OK till 2011) which also will need an opener... So openers are not obsolete yet . I use more tins as I no longer buy any frozen stuff.

????

Of course I have a tin opener. Not electric, although it is pretty fancy with a button you push on the side which releases the tin, so no cut fingers.

Now, as a canny shopper (forgive the pun!), a word of advice: tins without the pull things are much cheaper than the ones with. Exact same thing but minus the pull thing will save you 5 to 10p on the pound. Especially in specialist stores like Asian or Afro-Caribbean groceries - everything comes in tins without the pull things, and is much cheaper than at the supermarket chains.

I prefer an old-fashioned "can opener" -- one that you clamp down on the edge of the can and twist. I also have a really old style one in my Swiss Army knife, which I've carried since my early 20s. It's more of a sharp edge that you hook over the rim of the can and work along -- a little more primitive. But I still find occasion to use it once or twice a year, when I don't have a regular can opener.

The old butterfly ones, that bite into the tin vertically are bad as they seem to leave little shreds of metal in the food.

Best to get one with lateral cutting as you get a cleaner cut.

Not all cans - especially supermarket own brand and economy cans use the ring-pulls. I guess people don't eat much out-of-the-tin stuff nowadays.

I have a manual one as backup when we may have an electrical outage. I also have a tiny one from my military days that was used to open field rations and is known over here as a "John Wayne" in honor of the American actor who starred in so many war films.
I believe, however, that the manual opener will go into the dust bin of history along with phone boxes. LOL!

are we talking about the one with a pointed blade that you jabbed into the can and cut the metal with. ? Handy to keep in the car on road trips, cheaper to buy a can of food then to stop at a resturant, And the some what more modern version stays home where it won't get lost. Yup! Don't have and electric one .

Mines a Classic, 49 years old and in full working order.

I bought it for camping as a kid.

I couldn't sell it on E Bay as I'm thinking of passing it on as an heirloom.

It must be worth more than the half crown I paid for it.
