Is it normal for a person who is a manager accountant to work almost every Saturday and Sunday for a few hours even if you are working all week?

I think that depends on where you work and whether you have staff to whom you can delegate some of the work. I am a CPA and manager at a Big 4 Accounting Firm, and I almost always work a few hours every weekend. Plus I don't have staff doing any of the work for me, so I have to make sure it all gets done.

Most of the people I know who work in Accounting put in long hours, particularly during month-end, quarter-end, year-end, budget season and tax time.

Accountants work a crazy amount of hours. I'm looking for an accounting position, and two firms pay a $10,000 difference, because one is a Big 4 firm (Big Four firms have a lot of over time), and one doesn't really have overtime.
Accountants with a lot of overtime gets paid more throughout the year so that there is no overtime pay. (just the regular rate for more hours) They also get bonuses.
The hours are very long during tax season (March, April and September).
If the accountant feels he is working so much, he/she may choose to get a position with the client (sometimes clients hire accountants from their accounting firms).
For example, your client is a hospital, go work for them and then there isn't really overtime.
Good luck!

No. But accountants have to deal with "closing the books" and that has to happen on a regular schedule regardless of how many transactions there are. if the books can't be closed working regular hours, there is a 'control' problem/deficiency. You are either understaffed or under automated. What happens if Mr. Work-a-holic gets run over by a truck?

Some people are workaholics.
Some feel if they don't work 24/7 they will not get ahead.

if this is affecting your time, I would either collect over time or spend some quality time with your family/boyfriend and get some time off to charge yourself.

Working like this does drain the body and is not good.

Only if they have a good reason.
