I think so.

I do know this is why Ronald "Dutch" Reagan jumped ship and "became" a Republican. It's written that he was a third rate actor and when McCarthy reared his ugly head, Dutch went over to the dark side so he could get acting jobs..

Remember that era gave us such great hits as "Bonzo does (fill in the blank)". Reagan was co-star to a chimp.

Starred for forcing human beings to a minimum of google the Black record ("hollywood ten" is yet another solid seek term, yet bypass away the charges on there, and forget approximately approximately any link that has "harry potter" or "transformers" on it) in the previous answering, and making human beings study something. i'd agree, considering Communism itself wasn't incredibly a kinfolk term until around the pink Scare. We had to attend until we've been finished hating Germany in the previous we could get around to hating Russia.

Starred for forcing people to at least google the Black List ("hollywood ten" is another good search term, but leave the quotes on there, and ignore any link that has "harry potter" or "transformers" on it) before answering, and making people read something.

I'd agree, since Communism itself wasn't really a household term until around the Red Scare. We had to wait until we were done hating Germany before we could get around to hating Russia.

people don't seem to realize that, at that time, the communist party was very active in the USA. many artist who thought themselves 'progressives' supported their views and this was reflected in many of their books and films.

the ACLU was established in the 1930's to support communist party members here in America.

read some history about that time in our history and perhaps you will have different perspective.

BTW: the communist party is still active here in the USA.

Yes, there actually were communist groups around the country but they weren't open about that. It is my understanding that they promoted themselves as being charity groups and some people went to these meetings thinking that was what they were about. Some of the people on the black list never attended any meetings but were just acquaintances with people who had. It cost many their careers and I don't believe any of them were actually communists. It was just a witch hunt.

A bit, of course, but, in addition, much of the trash recorded on film is indicative of a souless and despicable sort of human race that is far too easy to have a negative and informed opinion of.

To an extent --

Both communism and liberalism were opposed by the conservative leaders of the time -- and often still are today.

So, because both were opposed, they got lumped together into the same category = "anything not what we want".

The fact is, liberalism is directly opposed to communism --- even more than conservatives are opposed to communism. But to the "us against them" mindset, anything that is not on their side gets lumped together into one big pot -- no matter how unrelated it is.

It started in the 30s when the US Socialist Party saw the propaganda potential of the movies (based on Stalin's similar Soviet viewppoint) and supported the move by reds into the media.

Hollywood actually supoprted Hitler after his treaty with Russia and only turned on him after he invaded Russia.
