It depends on the laws of the country/state and how they are defined.

Sexual assault is often a lesser crime, and includes any violent action that is sexually related -- such as grabbing a woman's breast without her consent. That's assault, not rape.

Usually "rape," "sexual assault," and "sexual battery" are three different terms for the same thing. However, a state may have given two or more of those terms different meaning in the statutes. The only way to know for sure is to find out what jurisdiction is using both terms and to lok up the statutes defining those terms.

Normal rape includes some type of body penetration, and sexual assault could be inappropriate touching, etc. But rape also tends to get pleaded down to sexual assault if there is not enough evidence. Hope this answers your question.

I guess ill explain it using situations. Rape can be when someone just has sex with you, king of like as if you were being held hostage, and you are sex'd. Or, the guy says "if you dont have sex with me, i will kill your babies" Or, if you are drunk, and are taken advantage of by someone you dont know, that rape. Sexual assault or abuse doesnt have to actually be sex. Like someone touching you, the actual forcing process into sex. Some starts sexually touching you, forcing you to kiss them and what not.

Vaginal, Anal or sometime oral penetration is necessary for rape. Sexual assault covers everything else.
