I heard that people in Europe and Australia are really into the gap year concept. Why hasn't it caught on in America? I just graduated high school in June and I'm going off to college later this month. If I heard of this gap year concept before I would might have taken it!

We do. It's just not very common. When I was in college working as a Residence assistant, I met alot of people who could have spent time away figuring out what they wanted to do before wasting their time and money on generals. I personally think more people should take them. I don't think it needs to be a national craze, just an informed personal choice. Colleges, like any other business have no interest in promoting them thoughg. There is a fear out there that if you don't go, you never will. For those who see college as some sort of saving grace, that's a terrifying concept. I had many folks just devastated by the idea that I didn't go right away.
Thing is, there are those that college is not the way and gain little by going. Yet another least favorite idea to the establishment.

I think that is a wonderful idea. Don't the Mormons do that, graduate from high school and do two years missonary work?

Here in the US, you could do two years service to your country prior to college. If a Bush is still president, you could go fight his war.

I did that, got out of high school, did 3 years, 1 month and 17 days in the military. Then I had to bum around for another two years, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Actually, I bummed around for eight years, got married and my wife figured out what I was going to do with the rest of my life.

Simply put, most Americans couldn't afford it. The cost of travel, insurance, etc. would be greater than most Americans could afford at that age.
