They were. are and always will be (choose one. They're all alike; liberals, socialists, communists, Democrats, totalitarians).

75 years ago people weren't pounded with "political correctness" to the point of being afraid of espousing the truth.

75 years ago, no. There were REAL communist in the US in 1932. It was the lowest ebb of the great depression, socialism was EVERYWHERE. Without it thousands of people would have starved. Roosevelt, probably the most socialist president ever elected to the US was elected in 1932. The US communist party was alive and strong at this point, and these were REAL communists who wanted to do away with the bourgeoisie through revolution, not "communists" as the Republican party so likes to call all those who dissent to their conservative dogma.

So I think the left then would probably have seen the liberals of today as dagerously conservative, against radicalism and probably even class traitors.

Anyone that stood between Joseph McCarthy and his dream of being paid good money for doing nothing, was a communist 57 years ago. I'm sure a lot of "right winged" conservatives would be considered communists too.

75 years ago? Most of us didn't even really know what communists were. We weren't even fighting the fascists yet. We were busy with the depression, the dust bowl, prohibition, and recovering from the "Roaring" twenties.

If todays right wing conservatives in Britain were around 75 years ago they would indeed be considered left wing and liberal. If todays right wing conservatives in the U.S were around 75 years ago they would probably be saying " This German guy with the funny Charlie Chaplin moustache sounds like he's got some interesting ideas..."

You can say anything you want on answers about Democrat being Communist , but don't dare mention the Washington Madam are the Republicans will throw violation on you, it never ceases amaze me, I know the truth but I have never put a violation on what sex maniac Bill Clinton is or how Hillary has a wife, but don't dare mention the Washington Madam because you speak the truth about the visits and the Republican don't like the truth. More are names are coming out just set tight.
How can you set there running the Democrat down but yet one thing that already proven their have been visits to the Washington Madam and more will come out. Republicans are are still denying the truth, but we know you are upset with your party going out of commission, so own up to it . The Truth Shall Set You Free. Putting violation on me feel free anytime I don't care, I might just start myself and hitting that violation button, watch out calling the Democrats communist.

What can you define left-wing as being?

If liberalism stands for freedom, then wouldn't an oppressive regime with total control over your private life run contrary to the ideals of freedom?

Real liberals are libertarian. They stand for freedom.
Fake liberals are called liberal (or neoconservative) and they stand for greater government control of your finances, social choices, and privacy.

Old school conservatives are in the middle. They regulate their OWN behavior, usually through church or through moral codes of conduct, while not mandating that everyone follow thier personal religious code (seperation of church and state), giving voluntarily to help the poor (social justice without government autocracy), defending themselves rather than having a police state (second amendment) and keeping the government off of our back.

The Republicans used to stand for this. Now they are a party of no ideas. The Democrats are a party of bad ideas.

I recommend we trash both parties and start all over again with some moderate voices.

termatology has evolved..in today's context, liberal means they adhere to a more socialist form of government at least in my understanding from the posts here.

FYI: many do not realize that the ACLU was established in the 1930's to help the communist party members in the USA to combat America's hatred for communism and it's followers. the communist party is still alive here in the USA.

The policies of the radical left mimic those of any socialist doctrine.
Read a little Marx and listen to Hillary for a few minutes.
She could be the second coming of virtually any socialist dictator.
BTW, to assert that radical liberals (the leadership of your "Left Wing") oppose socialism is ludicrous.

"Left winged" and liberal used in tandem was unknown 75 years ago. Liberalism did support woman's suffarage, child labor laws, alcohol availability, and unionism for collective bargaining agreements. Communism is actually just short hand for a dictatorship with government control of production in industry, the anti-liberal system.
