I noticed that no one who has responded to this question has mentioned Severance Hall or the Blossom Music Center yet- these are the winter and summer homes of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. The Zoo is a great place for kids and families, and there are plenty of good restaurants in and around the city. House of Blues is one of these. For shoppers, Cleveland offers the Beechwood Mall, Crocker Park, Legacy Villiage, and the outlet malls down around the Solon and Aurora area on the east and southeast sides of the city. What one of the other responders said about the Galleria is definitely NOT true- there are still some very nice shops there, and at least 2 good restaurants. I used to work in the Galleria Tower when I lived in Shaker Heights, so I know what I am talking about. Speaking of Shaker, I would encourage you to visit that area if you have a chance- it's a lovely inner ring suburb of the city, and you will have to go through it anyway if you want to get to the Beechwood Mall. Other highlights in the city include the lake, the Rock n'Roll Hall of Fame, the Science and Tech Museums, and Case Western Reserve University. Cleveland IS undergoing some renovation downtown, so the parking and driving situations may get a little tough at times. I'd recommend parking somewhere along one of the Rapid ( called the RTA by visitors to the city) routes, and taking the trains into and out of the city. You will save yourself a lot of time and headaches with parking, not to mention saving yourself some money. You can get a day or weekly pass at the Rapid stations which will allow to ride the trains unlimited times for one price. Parking in the RTA lots is usually free, as long as it isn't for more than 24 hours at a stretch in any one place. Again, I used to live in Shaker Heights, so I know these things- and I still have relatives there, so I know things haven't changed all that much.

If you have time and want to do some things outside the city, I'd take the kids and go to Cedar Point for the day, or you may want to make it a weekend, as they do have a hotel on the edge of the park. Cedar Point has rides and lots of fun things for kids to do, and there is also a water park. Another place to visit is Geauga Lake, which is yet another amusement park and resort area on the east side of Cleveland. To the south, you will find the Cuyahoga National Park and forest, and they have great trails for hiking, biking, and a range of outdoor activities. There is also a railroad that runs through the park , and tours on it are open to the public.

Sailing on Lake Erie is also a possibility- there are plenty of small companies which have sailboats for charter. Have a great trip, and I hope this helped.

Overall, the city has an inferiority complex; it's truly the land of mediocrity. The residents have come to expect second (or third) best and for whatever reason, that's okay with them. But allow me to be specific: the traffic is awful -- I haven't seen this much gridlock since I left NYC -- and lots of bad drivers. The condition of the roads is terrible -- it's pothole central! There are places where it seems like you're driving on the surface of the moon. The weather is crappy (save for a few short months) and things are so spread out geographically, nothing is convenient. This is the only city I've ever seen that squandered it's waterfront district. There is a huge stadium (that gets used maybe 20 times a year?) sticking up like a big ugly wart on the lakefront. As a matter of fact, all of the sports facilities are in the downtown area which only further complicates the traffic problem. Seeing as there is a lot of land in Cuyahoga County, it would have been so easy to plunk any of these down in a field where traffic and parking wouldn't be an issue. There may be good healthcare, a world class symphony and art museum, but it's not enough to cover the other ugly blemishes. There is abject poverty and parts of town you don't want to drive through. As of today, there have been 92 murders and with three more months to go this year, we are on target to beat last year's record. Cleveland does not rock.

Avoid the Galleria on E.9th. All the stores moved out and it's basically just a collection of fast food lunch counters. Under the Hyatt is actually called the Arcade. It is nice and historic.

House of Blues on E4th is good for food and might be lucky and catch a good act there. Good comedy clubs across the street from the house of blues at Hilarities. They get prime time comics along with the Improv in the flats. Go to a Tribe game for sure. The Bluepoint Grill is Cleveland's best restaurant.

Cedar Point is the best amusement park in the world and only 2 hours away. Niagara Falls is only 3.5 hours away.

I agree with everything violamom74 said. Just to let you know, right now Cleveland is under construction, we are orange barrel city right now. So be prepared to find alternate routes while here. Coventry is a great place with a lot of great restaurants, Tommy's, Mint Cafe. Also Little Italy is right down the hill, and they have an array of restaurants as well. Shaker Square, also has some fine dinning areas too. Our Art Museum is under construction too, so most of it is closed off, but you can still go, they have one main exhibit, so they are still open. Have fun.

The zoo is great if you are traveling with kids. The baseball games are always fun. If you don't want to pay the price to see a major league game, Eastlake has a really nice minor league park. There are also several nice parks for hiking, swimming, fishing. http://www.clemetparks.com/. Cleveland also has some good microbreweries. Check out Great Lakes Brewery. And there are some decent wineries in the area.
