The Indiana University Kinsey Reports reported 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual.
A 1990 study (Homosexuality/Heterosexuality by McWhirter, Sanders, and Reinisch) stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.
A 1993 study (The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior) found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences.
Since these three studies show similar results, it could be said that 9-14% of men are homosexual and 2-6% of women are homosexual. These percentages do not include those who identify as bisexual.

No one actually knows nowadays because the issue has become SO politicized. There's TONS of propaganda from groups who want you believe that it's either a huge percentage, or a very tiny percentage.
The last big study (Shere Height's- sp?) blasted the old ~10% idea because it was based upon prison populations, which (in some ways) did make a good study group because the population is controlled and could be studied over many years. In fact, Masters & Johnson had said about 15% of males and about 9% of females were gay.
There may be about those percentages, but again, we can't know for certain these days. It's important to remember that many gay and bi people go to epic lengths to hide these urges from everyone they know (even spouses in straight marriages), so the numbers might be somewhat higher...but who knows by how much? There just aren't any reliable sources.
Personally, just fom nothing but observations over the years, I tend to think that the numbers are probably about what M&J said, but maybe 3 - 4 percentage points higher. That's just a guess though.
Good luck...and be wary of anyone who claims they "know for sure".

The current estimates are approximately 3%, but as many homosexuals probably want to protect their privacy and this may or may not include bisexuals there are no truly accurate figures available. It used to be estimated at 10%, but that figure was deemed to be too high. There probably is a genetic component, but I don't think it has been identified yet.

I hear different stats anywhere from 2-3% to 10%. Who knows? You also have to take into account how many men/women are lying/closeted/not answering. It's probably 10% who are honest enough to admit it. The statistic is probably much greater.

Society is awakening to the fact that it's a significant number. Estimates range from the deliberately-deflated (by the Hateful and bigoted RRR Cultists -- the "Religious Radical Right -- who want people to think it's only 2%), to the deliberately overblown (by over-zealous gay rights activists -- who are right, but tend sometimes to get carried away when it comes to statistics -- who often claim it's 10%.)
So in reality, it's probably quite close to 5%. But hey!! That's 15,000,000 Americans. And that IS significant! And they all deserve across-the-board EQUAL rights -- including the right to marry their same-sex parteners, when they wish.

The estimates I've read are between 2 and 10 percent. I don't know if that is true or not. 10% seems high to me.

when the world can embrace homosexuality the way it does heterosexuality, we may be able to take a survey. I don't believe it will happen before then. (I think this is sad)
