It's kind of like a parent telling there child "don't do this because its bad for you" Well battery acid is bad for me, If I drank battery acid I would die.....so does that mean battery acid should be illegal? If they can trust people with alcohol they should be able to trust people with other things. What do you think.

Also, isn't odd that we have more people in our prisons then China. They are a country of over one BILLION people, yet we beat them with the number of people we have locked away. This war on drugs is bullshit.

Yes, it's beyond preposterous. The money we have wasted on the war on drugs could have rebuilt all the failing infrastructure we're so aware of this past week. In my state of Indiana, we spend far more on new prisons than on new schools. The waste of manpower, and brainpower, lost to society because of stupid drug policy, is a tragedy in it's self.
The potential taxes generated by legalizing and licensing marijuana growers are incredible, yet the government continues to follow a failed policy, claiming some treaty signed in the thirties can't be violated.
On another front, security at our borders, the same coyotes that smuggle in drugs, and people, have no qualms about smuggling in some terrorists, but still we allow these porous borders to exist ?
I could go on for days in this vein, but nobody who can do anything about it is listening !

If you think our laws are preposterous, you should check out China's drug law. How about being put to death for a drug sentence?

Let's Celebrate UN Anti-Drug Day...By Killing People

Yesterday was the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) annual International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Most countries that actually observe the day (mainly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia), generally celebrate it by burning piles of drugs and holding propagandistic anti-drug events.

But China really knows how to put on an anti-drug day show. Every year, it executes drug offenders on anti-drug day. This year was little different, as this headline indicates: China Approves Death Penalty for Seven Drug Traffickers:

Drug laws are ridiculous. If we legalized marijuana alone we would not have a federal deficit.

As for your prison statistic, that is not accurate.

The statistic that they have less than us is the unverified figure released by the government. Government critics put the number at something like 10-15 times the reported rate. That would put them well above us.

I agree that our drug policies aren't very effective, but I am not as sure as you of the answer. Certainly a kid caught smoking a joint doesn't deserve much more than a stern warning, but a smuggler who shoots it out over a million in heroin is another matter. Laws are not always designed to be fair though, sometimes they are designed to deter crime.

In China, over 90% of the serious criminals are tried, convicted and executed within weeks of their arrest. That drastically cuts the prison population, and reduces, but doesn't eliminate, crime.

Personally I favor the "Let the punishment fit the crime" strategy, which I believe is more consistent with American values, but I must admit that if prevention is your only goal, the "kill them all" strategy is statistically proven to be more effective.
