That you had to learn some of the new employees language, what would you say?

I would say that's fine. Now pay for the classes I'm going to need to take to do it, and/or the computer software, and provide me with a computer that can translate the language both ways. Otherwise, its not in my job description - sorry. I love learning new languages, but being FORCED to learn a new language at my job would make me question the wisdom of my boss - why did they hire someone who can't speak the language? They will spending most of their time just learning English, and probably not working.

You should also ask that he or she put it in writing that this is part of your new job assignment. If you don't do it or can't do it they might try to fire you over it, and this way you would have legal protection if it was not in your job description.

Well, it would help to know more about the organization that employees you. Technically, the United States does not have an official language, so we can't really pull the English card. But I would speak to my boss and tell him that accomodating my colleagues was not a part of my job description.

When I was a teenager (not very long ago!) and I worked at McDonald's, a lot of the other employees were Hispanic and they didn't know English, like at all. Of course, I couldn't be more fluent in English (and plus, I do know some Spanish) so I got better tasks than they did.

I would say that nowhere in my job description or the employee handbook does is say that I would be required to learn a new language in this position. We are in the United States and might I suggest that you provide lessons in English to your employees so that they would be able to understand the country that they have come to. Nowhere in history has any other nationality, i.e. German, Polish, Italian, etc., ever had their languages implemented. They all had to learn English in order to get and keep a job. So with all due respect, I decline your offer to learn a new language, unless of course you are willing to increase my salary substantially for being bilingual, and be willing to pay tuition for proper lessons.

It's a mouthful, but it gets the point across.

Enjoy your day!

When I was a senior in high school, I had to go to the elementary school and tutor a couple boys that couldnt speak English in math. I asked the teacher how I was suppose to do that and he shook his head and handed me a pack of flash cards. Nice, huh?

Is it imperative for me to communicate with them? If not then why don't they learn English. Isn't that the primary language we speak? BTW, if we went to another country wouldn't we have to learn their language?

I would be okay with that and I would help them learn my language as well. I love getting to know people from other countries.

I'd say, "In my own country, I have to speak another language. What's the benefit? Why cannot they learn to speak our language fluently since they are here?"

I'd say that is malarkey, why should you have to spend you own time learning another language to do a job you are already doing satisfactorily. This is totally unfair and absurd.

Draw obscene stick figures and blame it on the new people. What? I mean what are they going to say? Just kidding.

Hey, didn't you do that once to that annoying guy that sat next to you?

Wait now that I think of it. Didn't you cut people's heads out of pictures and stick them on magazines? Even to the people you liked.
