When I'm with someone and a pole comes between us when we're walking, that person always comes to my side hence avoiding splitting the pole. Why is that?

If you're walking with someone, go the same direction they go. If you split the pole, it's bad luck.

You're breaking a friendship when you split the pole

That too was something that started with ancient man... And from what I read somewhere back in ancient time when a man and a woman separated and walked on both side of the tree the male was bitten by a snake and die... And no one was able to figure out how he die until a shaman saw the bite mark of a snake and ever since that day that has been a sign of bad luck.........................................................................

I'm not sure, but my sixteen year-old daughter always says the same thing to me. So I usually don't question why?
