I often use that but always by accident. If I want to backspace over a part of a word to make a correction while touch-typing I sometimes hit the "\" key which is just below the 'backspace" key.
it is so easy for a fast typist to do that I am not surprised it is showing up so often. Think of it as sloppy proof reading, not as a new trend in computerized grammar.

More than likely, it is a typographical error.
The other possibility is that someone thinks that they are using some sort of text mark-up language (like HTML) where you have to enter a sequence of characters in order to see a special character. I can't imiagine why they would think you have to do this for an apostraphe -- it is usually ised to add accents to vowels.
I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

It's a mistake. The foreward slash is right next to the apostrphe AND the space on the keyboard. It's just an honest mistake.

Without the actual context in which it was used, it's difficult to determine, but superficially, it looks like a typo.

Perhaps because \ is pretty close to ' on the keyboard, so they're hitting it by accident? I'm not sure, but that's a possibility.
