earl campbell....i saw that man pummel opponents....it was amazing any of them got back up.....
barry sanders was good in college but was better in the pro's....the poor guy was running for his life....he had NO help with the lions.....if he had run for the cowboys or anyone with a better offensive line...he would have been great and the numbers would have been even more remarkable......
i chose campbell because of the way he ran over opponents...he truly was a vicious runner...

I'd put Barry Sanders first, slightly ahead of Bo Jackson, Walter Payton and Earl Campbell.

Barry Sanders is going to be your predominant answer because he is more contemporary than the rest. I believe he is the best RB ever to play the game and in response to your questions he'd be in a near dead heat for me with Earl Campbell.
Campbell had a lot of the same moves that Sanders had, but he had things that Sanders didn't have. He didn't cut an change direction quite as well, but he had mastered the spin move and had the ability to not only break tackles but the ability to carry defenders with him while adding those few extra yards.
The only other one on your list I'd have in this category is Payton and I'd put him at #3.
And let's not forget Chuck Ferguson. Ferguson was the first player to utilize the spin move as part of his playing style. His elusiveness set the tone for contemporary and later RBs.

I dont think this is a easy question. Barry Sanders was masterful and a lot of fun to watch but in my opinion he comes in second just cause he never finished as many runs as the guy who I thought was the most fun to watch in Gale Sayers. He was amazing with moves and speed.
Some of you will disagree but it is my opinion and many of you havent really watched Sayers run either cause he played in another generation. 22 Touchdowns in one year in wich they played less games and the talent was spread as thin as it is today with 32 teams compared to barely 20

Depends on what you like to see:
If you like pure speed hard to bet against Bo Jackson
Ability to make something out of nothing= Barry Sanders
Or how about the abilty to run throw a guy? Christian Okoye or Criag "Ironhead" Heyward! Old School Earl Campbell!
If you like you backs versatile Marshall Faulk for those years in St. Louis he might be running, receiving a screen or a deep patern!

I would have to say Barry Sanders was the most exciting. You could never be sure if he would break it all the way or get stopped for a loss. Marcus Allen was another one like that. Both of those RBs could turn defenses around like they were amateurs.
Today, I have to give that decision to LaDainian Tomlinson!
