who said it had to be just one instrument. I am a drummer by day, guitarist by night. (because the neighbors get mad if im playing at night). drums are always fun and you can teach your self, guitar is pretty simple as well. just look up guitar tabs to teach your self, its quite simple.

Every master of every instrument was once a beginner. I play guitar, and it is easy to learn to do simple things on the guitar. Once you know how to play three chords, you can play thousands of songs, but if you want to master the instrument, that takes years of study. The clarinet is supposed to be fairly easy to learn and you can get a budget model from Target (Baldwin/Gibson) that is decent. Still, you need to decide for yourself what it is that you really want to play. Most musicians that I know play more than one instrument - I do.

for someone very new to music, the piano is wise choice.
i find the violin much more fun though. (challenging, too.)
if you are too full of energy, playing the drums will give you an outlet.

I would say the "Stylophone" as endorsed by "Rolf Harris" himself.
Good luck finding one though.
