The mic is rating system for the Source magazine, probably the most well known hip hop magazine. They rank albums on a 1-5 scale (one being really bad to 5 being a classic). It used to be pretty rare to get a 5 mic rating but overall the past couple of years, it seems like anyone getting 5 mics was mostly political. (i.e. Jay-Z getting 5 mics for Blueprint then Nas getting 5 mics for Stillmatic when both were feuding).

I don't know if the 5 mic system still carries the same weight for rap fans anymore but a lot of great albums did receive 5 mics (De La Soul is Dead, Illmatic). The Source actually went back and retroactively gave 5 mics to albums in an anniversary issue that didn't get them the first time around (Chronic, Ready to Die).

The Source's integrity in the eyes of fans hasn't been the same since Benzino forced a reviewer to give his group Made Men, a 4.5 ranking for an album. Fortunately the album didn't sell very well. Benzino totally destroyed the credibility of that magazine.

The Source magazine uses a rating system of 1 to 5 mics for all hip hop albums...Albums recieving 5 mics are considered to be 'classics'
the last 5 mic albums were Scarface 'The Fix' and Lil Kim 'The naked truth'.....The Source is the only company that uses "mics" for ratings....other hip hop magazines like XXL give their ratings "S" (poor) to "XXL" (which is the equivalent of a 5 mic album)

The same thing as "five stars" - it gets the top rating, as good as they come. Guitar Player magazine uses guitar picks - this is very similar.
