There are many pro's and very few cons to wearing a helmet. First and foremost is protection. A good DOT approved helmet can prevent serious injury in the event you are thrown from your bike. It lessens the chance of a concussion, and if it is a full face type helmet, can prevent facial scarring.
A full face helmet also protects the rider from insects ( bumblebees HURT at 60 MPH!!!!) and the stones and pebbles thrown up from the car or truck in front of you.
Your Insurance company may not even cover you if you fail to wear a helmet, and in most states it is the law.
Downsides: they can be rather hot sometimes, they can restrict your vision sometimes, and they can restrict your hearing sometimes. A proper fitting helmet can eliminate most of these downsides.

Although a helmet won't protect you in every crash situation, you stand a much better chance of surviving any accident where your head can contact any hard object. My dad laid his bike down when he hit loose gravel in a turn at about 20 mph. Even though he was wearing an open face helmet, he slid on his face and ended up with a hole in his right cheek, and a broken jaw. His mouth was wired shut for 3 months and he had to get a skin graft from his rear, (my mom still calls him "but-face" sometimes). I was 5 at the time and the first time I saw him at the hospital, I turned and headed for the door screaming "THAT'S NOT MY DADDY!!!"
I've been riding for 24 years now and won't think of riding without a full face helmet. The few riders I know who survived head injuries after a non-helmet get-off, either won't get on another bike, or won't get on another bike without a helmet.

Because it's so dangerous not to & whether your on a bike or in a car you'll get into at least 1 accident. Most motorcycle accidents are fatal or tragic to say the least. I know lots of riders & they've all gone down at least once. Most have permanant injuries to show but they're alive because they had a helmet on. My question is...why wouldn't you wear a helmet?

Its a legal requirement here, but I, along with most riders, would wear one anyway for safety.
I was knocked off a couple of days ago - at 15mph or so. Definite damage to my helmet, but my wife's one was gouged.
Somehow she chipped the bone under her eye - in a full face helmet, which was a good fit - her visor was down, and, while damaged, it didn't break. I don't want to think about what would've happened if she wasn't wearing it.

go to google.com and type in hurt report. pulled a guy out of a ditch once with no helmet. He was a gonner.
Hurt report says that your chances of survival in an accident go up 30% with a helmet. After seeing a dead guy die after someone pulled out in front, it makes you wonder how anyone can go without a helmet. I guess if I was the only one on the road, I'd consider it. But your going to get knocked off at some point by a guy checking for taco bell mild sauce, you know?
You ride'em you wreck'em

there is no real proof that helmets save lives
in the majority of motorcycle accidents where death occurs there's so much bodily damage also that it wouldn't have mattered
however they do help avoid the fly gut hairdo and the teary eyes.
I ride and most of my friends also. Two friends have died on bikes both wearing helmets one still died because the handlebars went through his mid-drift the other would have lived except the way the chin guard on his helmet hit it broke his neck.
however i still wear mine. I'm not stupid after all.

I've been riding for about 20 years now. I've broken a leg (badly) and had a few other issues with my bikes. I ALWAYS wear a helmet. In my "avatar" pic you can see me in my leather (Even though I live in Florida. In 90+ degree weather I smell like a goat!) and my "bucket" is hanging on the bar.
I don't have to wear a bucket, my state (FL) allows for it if you carry $10,000 extra insurance. It's cool enough when I'm moving, and it'll be cool for my noggin' when some butt-munch knocks me over. It's uncomfortable, but it's common sense. If you ride on two, protect yourself any way you can.
P.S. You don't "drive" a motorcycle. You "ride" it. Like a horse.

the fact is that states that do NOT have helmet laws and have rider education courses have LOWER fatality stats than states with a helmet law.EDUCATION not legislation!!! And lets not forget freedom of chioce and personal freedom what our country is all about[ supposedly] Let those who ride decide!!! I dont even own a helmet. I recently lost my left leg in a bike wreck would a helmet have done me any good? I still ride and no I dont wear a helmet.I dont need big brother telling me what to do for my own good.F__K a helmet!!!!

Where I live in Ontario it is the law,
Keep bugs out of my face, I was hit with a bumble bee a few years back and it nearly took my head off at 80 kph,
Keep the wind out of my face, I ride with a full face helmet,
AND after dumping my bike many years ago and dumping my bicycle I wear a helmet on both because what is your brain worth.
BTW I ride a sport bike and I wear a ballistic nylon jacket with built in body armour even on the hottest days.
