There are defiante trends in crafting. In 2002-2004, knitting was en vogue. Middle age women all across North America bought thick needles and fuzzy novelty yarn and learned how to knit hideous scarves. Everytually they got bored with the dead muppets and some learned more advanced and practical knitting while others put down thier needles forever. The ones who stuck around, or were knitting long before the novelty yarn trend, will tell you that even with in the craft there are trends in fibers, techniques and styles.
Scrapbooking is another example. It really started to take off in the late 90's mostly with mothers and it now a multi million dollar industry. Demand is starting to taper off but there are still scrapbook stores in just about any medium to large town and city.
The list goes on, Macreme was big in the 70's but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who still does it. Leather craft, plastic jewelery making (circa like 1988) and even beading which had a resergence a few years about when chucky beaded necklaces and braclets were in all the fashion magazines. Basically people will do what they see in the media, and what thier friends are doing. as tastes change according to cultural cues, trends in crafts and hobbies will change.

Of course... a PERSON's interests and hobbies change.
AS do the hobbies themselves !! When I first started in model railroading back in the mid-70's... affordability made it difficult to go beyond a simple loop with a few spurs... now, the hobby has DCC (Digital Command Control) that permits the operation of a dozen locomotives for the same cost (adjusted for inflation).

Of course. Everything changes and evolves. There is some truth in the old adage that " everything that's old, is new again". A ' zillion ' years ago I did macrame of all sorts. Now the jewelry is becoming popular again.

Yes they all come back eventually. I love quilting and all my friends say I'm like an old lady (only 31) but now quilting is bigger then ever not your great-grandmoms process anymore though now they have all kinds of gagets to make the process easier and quicker. You get to use your bed quilts within a year instead of 5 years.
