Why it's a good idea to get one:
A dog will do his best to please you and keep you smiling. He will curl up with you when you are feeling down or need some serious relaxation. He won't hold your mistakes against you or prejudge you for your looks, faults or lack of know-how. He'll be your unconditional friend and will play ball with you as long as you wish. He'll forgive you for all your mistakes, never holding them against you later. Sleeping at your feet and loving to please you, he will enjoy just spending time with you. He'll do his best to protect you, because you will be his master.

Why it might not be a good idea to get one:
A dog relies on you for everything- from his food, water, shelter, exercise, grooming, to his companionship, training, veterinary care and protection. Know what you are getting into. Are you prepared to spend the next 10-15 years of your life taking care of your dog? That is about how long your dog will live. Can you afford the added expense of a dog? When you get a dog, it is a life long commitment, and should not be treated like a piece of furniture that you can just "get rid of" when you get tired of it. After all, this dog will be part of your family. Would you get rid of your children because you were tired of them wetting their beds? Before you bring a dog into your home, think long and hard. Are you prepared for the responsibility?

Our family loves our dog so much I can't imagine our life without him. He is gentle and fun! BUT, we waited a long time before we got a dog. We wanted to make sure we could afford to take good care of a dog. Shots, flea and heartworm medicine, food and even having the pet "fixed" cost money. If you get your dog from a rescue shelter many of them will spay or neuter your dog for free. We bought a cage and he stays in it during the day to keep him out of trouble. (Our dog was a puppy when we got him, so he grew up being used to the crate and doesn't mind.) Also make sure no one at your house is allergic to dogs. It would be terrible to make a friend and have to get rid of him. Also, if don't own your own house check with your landlord to make sure you can have a dog and if you can, what kind. Some will allow small dogs and not big ones. Good luck! Dogs are wonderful companions!

The one reason for not getting a dog is if you have allergies, on the other hand they can be a pleasure to have around, a faithful friend.

you should, many need good homes. but don't if you can't give it love...each one deserves an abundance of love, so don't cheat them.
