Some cases the baby is removed at birth, However some jails and prisons have programs where the baby can stay with mother for the first 6 months.

There are a VERY few prisons that have systems set up where an incarcerated mother can keep her child with her. However, jail/prison is generally not a safe place for a child and most are not able to accomodate children.
What usually happens is that the woman is taken to the hospital where she gives birth. Once she is discharged, she returns to jail. The newborn, if there is no other family member that can care for him or her, will go into state custody. If there is a family member that can be approved by the judge, then they can get temporary custody to avoid the baby going into state custody.
The baby would have the benefits of colostrum, at most, because of course after the mother is returned to jail and the baby is in the custody of someone else then breastfeeding is impossible.

The mother goes to the hospital to give birth with guards at her sides at all times. The baby is taken from the mother when the mother is discharged. A family member/friend has to pick the baby up within 72 hours of its birth or it is placed with social services into a foster home. As much as your going to hate hearing this no baby NEEDS to be breast fed (its a choice one the mother who is in jail does not have). The mother can not pump her milk in jail because they have no means of keeping it cool until someone can come and retrieve it. Best advice....Dont screw up when your pregnant and avoid jail

she stays in jail and gets medical care. when she goes in to labor an ambulance is called and she's taken to the hospital to deliver.
the baby is then taken and put in to foster care or given to the family if it's determined by the courts/family services
we get calls a few times a month for deliveries in the women's correctional facility
way to be a good parent!!

my mother was in a minimal security federal penitentiary when she was pregnant w/my youngest brother. there was a special program for mom's and pregnant women who lived in a halfway house and got to have their kids with them. my mom was in there when she was about 7 mos pregnant. she gave birth at a local hospital w/no pain meds- she was in jail for drugs and they didn't want to give her drugs- and she got to spend his 1st 2-3 mos w/him. then my aunt came and got him and raised him until she got out of jail. she of couse had to go back to the penitentiary and finish her time.
