This could be anything, like a house, a car, a mate.

Well it is a bit of waste of time, if your not planning out how to get those things.

No it is not a waste of time. Because as you say you don't know if you could get it in the future. That means there is a possibility go get it. We therefore should have dreams, goals, and hope. If we don't we will surely never achieve them. It is what makes life interesting, and exciting. Otherwise we will just get buried in quicksand, and end up asking questions in the mental illness, or psychology category on yahoo answers.

There is also another alternative for you if you feel it is a waste of time. When your lying in bed going to sleep, visualize all the things you want, slowly you will fall asleep without wasting any time.

Interesting, one could say that in our finite lives all is really a waste of time... I think it really depends on the person and their situation and their desire or need or ambition if you will, however we are, if we had no wants left unfulfilled we could be sure we are not really alive. I think that a hungary baby will cry, it is our nature to express wants. I think that we also will stop expressing them if we believe they are not possible. Want has, in my thinking, little to do with the moment and more to do with the future, and the future is always unknown... the best we can do is influence the odds and who would even try if they thought it impossible?

I don't think it's a waste of time. If everyone considered wanting somehting they were unsure they could get, a lot of people would lose motivation and hope. If you got two jobs and saved all your money, and were trying hard to buy a special type of i-pod that could be sold out any moment, it would help if you didn't think it was a waste of time. It would keep you working, and give you something to work for.

While it may be a waste to want things you will never be able to attain, it is healthy and useful to desire what may be attainable in the future - by working hard or otherwise creating the opportunity. This is the basis of ambition, and very highly regarded in our culture.

Yes, I think so. If you concentrate on the here and now, and do these things to the best of your ability then I believe things in the future will fall into place.

Also it has been my experience that there is a distinct difference between what you 'want' in life and what you 'need' in life.

No. It is what dreams are made of. I may never own my dream house but I can walk through it and decorate it in my mind every night as I drift off to sleep. No one can reposes it. Mother nature can't destroy it. I can redecorate at will with no expense and it brings me great joy and good peaceful sleep. A waste of time- I don't think so.

The important point here is, like you said, that you don't know if and when you will get those wishes fulfilled.

Lack of knowledge and certainty can be an impediment, stopping you from even dreaming about them. But then again, lack of certainty can work both ways, offering confidence in the absence of a definite outcome.

I don't think it's a waste of time if you plan for a way to get or achieve things that you want. If you simply sit around thinking about what you want, and don't have/make a plan to get them, then yes, I'd have to say it's a waste of time.

Anything that is not relevant to the expansion of one's self in/or one's environment, or if doesn't appeal to our basic instincts, then it surely is a waste of time. What we want and need have been smeared and blurred to an unbelievable extent by what society dictates. Carry on my wayward son. All I need is a knife, unbridled will, and the air I breath.
