Based on recent scientific research, the reason why silver is the necessary metal for the destruction of werewolves is that the silver reacts almost instantaneously(and violently) with the extra oxide molecules in the WW's bloodstream. When the oxide levels decrease to normal levels, the reaction ceases and the individual returns to normal.. Look it up in the New England Journal of Medicine, I think it was in Oct of 2006..

First, the "silver bullet" fad is a recent one, and stories of werewolves have existed for far longer than bullets.
When young, I read a book of eastern european legends. In these stories, a werewolf could only be killed by slashing him across the forehead with a silver knife. I think that even the direction of the slash was important. Why the silver is important I do not know, except that I believe that silver is considered to have magical properties (or magic-canceling properties) which gold and lead do not possess.
Another interesting point was that the surest way to become a vampire after death was to be a werewolf during life.
I hope this helps.

There are a few reasons. 1. Silver in Alchemy has both curse removing and Lunar associations. 2. Silver is a "pure" metal. It is very flexible and can be melted to burn out impuritys very easitly. 3. Silver is reflective and causes the werewolf to be dazed. 4. Silver is able to be absorbed by the blood in relativitly short time, werewolfs with tend to have very high metabolism ( the near instant regeneration) so the silver is quickly desolved and carried to their vital organs, which resolves in heavy metal poisioning. 5. Silver did and indeed still does form many Holy symbols. And alhough religeon has little to do with werewolves it was a fitting concept for many people after the fact of killing a werewolf that they used their deities holy symbol to do it. 6. and lastly, Silver just is cool, its precious, but not the most precious. so its a way to bump up sales. for good story tellers.

Actually, I think the silver bullets need to be made from a silver crucifix that has been blessed. I, also, think that there were a lot more people running around with silver than with gold when this became the 'rule of thumb'.

In times gone by people could not afford gold crosses so they used silver instead, so you melt the silver and make it into a bullet,Regular bullets will pass straight through it has to stay in the body to work. Its a load of bull anyway.

Its all to do with the power of the moon. Werewolves come out at night, the time when the moon rules and silver is the colour of the moon.

to JimPettis the silver bullet actually dates back to the legend of The Beast of Gévaudan. Its said that silver was a metal associated with purity so it must cleanse the soul of the beast

I think it has to do with silver being 'of the moon' and werewolves also have to have a full moon to change.
