Is it wrong to have reptiles such as snakes, tortoises and lizards as pets? even if they are cared after properly????? I really want a tortoise but almost feel bad, I have researched them so much and know how to care for them properly, but i live in a one bed flat and feel its wrong to own one, the set up for the tortoise will be huge and it would have so much room to wonder and have fun, but i still feel quite cruel!!!!
can I have your opinions please?????

I think there is a difference between it being "wrong for people to have reptiles as pets" and you wanting to cram a big tortoise setup into you little one-bedroom place.
you are really asking about yourself and not about people in general and that reverses the answer.
People with pets learn compassion for all animals so that answer about reptiles is that it is not wrong. As far as your situation you obviously know it is a bad idea but seem to want us to talk you into doing it anyway and that is wrong.
Try holding off till you live somewhere with more space.

I think you answered your own question as you feel it would be wrong to have a tortoise. Of course it is wrong to keep a tortoise in a one bedroomed flat just the same as it is wrong to keep one in a house. A tortoise needs to be outside in a garden . To keep one penned up in a strange environment like a flat would be like penning you up in prison. I don't agree with keeping reptiles at all unless you have they can have as natural an environment as possible. Us humans do the animal population a lot of harm just because we fancy owning something. Please think about this and if you really want a tortoise, wait until you have a garden it can live in. I love tortoises, we always had them when we were children but I wouldn't own one now even though I have a huge garden as I would worry about it escaping.

too many people buy reptiles without knowing all the facts regarding care - alot of reptiles die within the first 3 months of purchase becuase the owner has neglected some small fact.. beyond that most dont appreciate how big some reptiles grow - like iguanas or even bearded dragons.. as such the owners soon have a pet that is bigger than the cage... and then they look to get rid of it.
over all do reptiles benefit from being pets?? often not - so many are kept in small cages and they dont like being handled...
I would say there are some owners who do look after their pet reptiles but most do not...

A tortoise is a huge commitment as they live for many years. They would need a garden to roam around and you would have to ensure you took proper care with its hibernation.Without a garden I would not consider it and as you are already doubtful you should think about an altrnative.

people who've reptiles would desire to ask you what's incorrect with you for preserving canines/cats/guinea pigs, etc. it somewhat is all a remember of opinion. check out what share canine assaults there are. canines are extra risky than reptiles. Reptiles are alluring animals and that they do no longer require around-the-clock care. they do no longer require you to have somebody come look after them in case you depart city for some days. they gained't wake you interior the process the night to pass outdoors. they do no longer would desire to be spayed or neutered to evade extra undesirable pets. they do no longer require pictures, heartworm meds, flea remedies. they do no longer provide off an scent. human beings are no longer allergic to them. they gained't chunk up your shoes, or claw your furniture. they gained't scouse borrow dinner off the range. they are able to be stored in a cage this is out of ways, and make superb reflects. Your visitors is truthfully no longer aggravated by ability of them constantly leaping, licking, rubbing on them. i will pass on and on. I unquestionably have canines myself and have had cats. I at the instant have numerous reptiles. i discover reptiles to be a extra reasonable puppy, yet everybody would have their very own opinion.

i have kept reptiles for 20 years. they can be very rewarding pets but not in the normal sense - ie you don't sit there stroking your lizard! as long as you have a good enclosure and everything that he/she needs i don't see anything wrong with it. reptiles are the closest things to dinosaurs that we've got and i find them fascinating.
be warned though - it's not cheap to set up a good habitat and if you need a vet it gets VERY expensive you'd be surprised how much electricity you us as well (heat mats/lamps/pumps) or that might just be me - i've got 3 snakes (garter +2corns) and a pair of breeding bearded dragons they are cool as fcuk!

My sister has lizards and i feel so sorry for them, it makes me cry when i see them in there little glass box. I think its okay to have a tortoise though, as long as you let it wonder around and not keep it locked up all day. I want one!!!!

I think such pets are fine, so long as they are properley looked after and any safety issues are prepared for. They can be good company in a way.

I've had snakes, frogs, and a leapord gekco. There is nothing wrong with keeping them. They would probably live a longer life since they do not have preditors and have a steady food supply. So I say get your turtles. They are cool!

its not cruel unless you get your pet on a whim and not have a clue how to look after it and the pet ends up dead from neglect-
you sound like you are responsible so dont be hard on yourself
