You must spend your money for the best brand.

As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.

I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.

On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

You have to have an internet connection of some sort, which means (as a rule) a subscription to some sort of service; you will probably also need CDs/DVDs for storage. A spare battery can be a good thing to have; also, you may want a mouse to use instead of the stupid little touch-pad (they wear out fast). Laptops get hot quickly, so if you're actually going to use one in your lap, a cooling pad is practically a necessity. None of these except the first two is mandatory, but I find that's what most people want.

Since you don't need anti-virus software, as long as you have an internet service provider, you are set. If you have DSL or a cable modem, you would need to pay extra for that. If you get for instance, Verizon DSL, you pay a flat monthly fee and you do not get charged for your time on the internet, it is unlimited. Verizon will also be your internet service provider, so you wouldn't have to pay extra. Same goes with Roadrunner etc.

Nothing else really unless you want some accessories:

cordless mouse from Logitech-nice to have and faster than using the touchpad-runs $20-30

travel bag/cover-to protect your PC and holds stuff-Targus makes nice selection $14-25

mousepad-cheap $1-10

any software you might want to buy

Enjoy the MAC!
