It really depends on the context. As others have stated, an "unseemly" woman (I'm being nice) it is also a form of dance that started back during the 50's & 60's to the ska/rocksteady genre. From there, it went into the hardcore punk scene. It isn't the "slam-dancing", but more the walk-skip one would do on the outside edges of the pit. (See the DRI logo-stick guy skanking)
