Castles were self sustained they had farms around the castles and food was taken from them - and prepared by their serfs in the castle kitchens :) there is a castle in Ireland called Bunratty Castle where you can go for a medieval banquet great experience they even throw someone in the dungeon lol .................

They grew it, bought it and forced people living on the Lords land to contribute to their stores.
The castle was an open place except for when being attacked by an enemy. Daily life wouldn't be too much different than you going out to the store. They had store rooms inside the castle walls to keep provisions.

From the villagers at the foot of the castle, in most cases serfs. These people belonged to the lord and had to work his land for him. They were a lot like slaves.

They had serfs farm their lands and they were rich enough to buy livestock and other things. They kept bees for honey and some castles even had ponds in their baileys (courtyards) for fresh fish.

they had slaves and a lot of land -- only they weren't bought and sold -- they usually came with the land and were called serfs.
later during the age of imperialization they were often the landholders for colonial plantations -- you would send your son off to oversee the planation in the bahamas.
