48 days.

1/12 - 1/16.

rate1 + rate2 = 1/12 room per day.
rate1 = 1/16 rpd.

Solve rate2 = 1/12 - 1/16.

Ben does 1/16th of the room in a day.
So in 12 days he does 3/4's of the room while Willy does 1/4.
Therefore, Willy will take 4 times 12 days or 48 days to do the room working alone.
Pretty slow.

Ben can finish the job alone in 16 days.
It means when he works for 12 days, he can finish (12*100)/16 = 75% of the job.
Willy finishes the remaining 25% of the job in 12 days.
So to get the job finished all by himself, Willy will require (12*100)/25 = 48 days.
Answer = 48 days.

This is a poor question, metrologically speaking.

You do not know how much of the job Ben does during the 12 day period. There may be a relationship between the number of people on the job and the efficiency of each person on the job. From that perspective, all people may complete the job in the same amount of time, and the efficiency of each person decreases per person added to the task.

Ben and Willy may both complete the job, alone, in 16 days, but together, can only complete the job in 12 days.

Go back and tell your teacher to ask better questions. If they're going to make vast assumptions in the premise of the question, you can make vast assumptions in the answer.

Willy won't get to do the job alone because he is slow as hell. I think the answer is 48 days. Willy only does 1/4 of the work that Ben does 4 days of 16. Therefore, by my logic, multiply 4 times 12....48.

room / (ben + willy) = 12
room = 12ben + 12willy
room / ben = 16
room = 16ben
16ben = 12ben + 12 willy
4ben=12willy
room = 16ben = 4*12willy = 48willy
willy alone will take 48 days

let area to be painted = X m ²

Ben
time = 16 days
rate of work = (X / 16) m ² / day

Willy
time = t days
rate of work = (X / t) m ² / day

Working together they will cover
(X / 16) + (X / t ) m ² / day
= (tX + 16X) / 16t m ² / day
= X(t + 16) / 16t m ² / day

X/12 = X(t + 16) / 16t
1 / 12 = (t + 16) / 16t
16t = 12t + 192
4t = 192
t = 48 days

Willy will take 48 days working alone.
(he really should get a move on!!)

willy would take 22 days to do it alone. 12 days for both.....half of that is 6. 6 plus 16 equals 22.
