Boric acid. Spray it along the line that you see the ants traveling at, also at the open to the wall or window from where they come. They trample in it and take it back to their nest. In about a week or so you should not have any more ants and no more nest.

Some valid answers so far; and I have a suggestion or two.

First of all as with any critter (insect or otherwise) BAITING them is totally the worng approach...even if it's poisoned bait.

BAIT also tends to leave residue; and I really wanna assume that an ANT; as industrious and tennacious as they are; can probably detect "residue" even long after WE may think it no longer exists.

Most obvious are suggestions of a "barrier"...Something that KEEPS critters from crossing; or if they happen to; something that they'll choose not to try again. That said however; and going back to what ANTS are all about; a "barrier" in your mind; may only be a "detour" for them.

I guess my point is; try everything known to be toxic or a deterrant; to ANTS at least; and don't use DIY recipies that include ANY food based products. It might be adviseable to actually research; what ants are TURNED OFF by.

Can give you a couple. Artificial Sweetner was designed as a poison. You can use this in small quantities in the areas where you see ants. Second, mix Boric acid and honey, place in bottle or beer caps and place behind, cans or other counter top items. This will insure your pets don't get into the solution. The Boric Acid is taken back to the nest, fed to the larva, killing the carrier ants and the larva. The nest will die.

Get rid of sugar. If you want to see how attracted ants are to sugar, just pour a pound or two on the ground (away from house) and watch. The ants will actually build a large mound over the sugar and live there all summer.

Probably all of the other answers are good, however; look for something called ant chalk, a low grade pesticide which you draw with - ie a circle around an infested area, a line over which you do not want them to cross, etc. I didn't notice if you said where you live, but the chali is usually carried in a Chinese owned pet store or a Chinese grocery, etc. It works instantly.

we have always used corn meal. the ants carry it home and when they eat it, it expands inside them and kills them and also because they cannot digest it.
The bonus is that it's non toxic to any other creatures or pets.

Kerosene. It does the trick if you don't mind the smell.
