... at the same time in some U.S. states by an old law that has still not been repealed?
Have there been any prosecutions for this recently and who brought them - the local sheriff or a nosey neighbour reporting someone? Would you report someone for violating this law and what would that say about *you* for having noticed?

Yes "wildamber..." I wasn't being anti-American - I know that we can be just as ridiculous - in fact I am looking for a toyboy (American or British)just now and would be quite happy for our underwear to appear together on my line - he would have done the washing though!

I'm not saying my family were repressed but hanging ANY underwear on the washing line was forbidden! My grandmother who mainly raised me considered it the height of sluttishness and a definite sexual invitation! Even to this day I feel a little sordid hanging my smalls on the line and try to discreetly peg them with items of the same colour so they aren't obvious. Isn't it funny how some things stay with you? About it being illegal in some states in the U.S,I wouldn't be surprised, they have some ultra-conservative people over there!

Hi Joan,

Here is a site that list "dumb laws" state by state and internation..some of them are pretty funny...

In Alaska : it is legal to shoot bears, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited

It is considered an offense to push a live moose out of a moving airplane

In Arizona :Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.

California : Animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship.

It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale.

Women may not drive in a house coat

Pennsylvania :It is illegal to have over 16 women live in a house together because that constitutes a brothel

It it illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator outdoors.

Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue.

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.

You may not catch a fish by any body part except the mouth.

In Texas: A recently passed anticrime law requires criminals to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, and to explain the nature of the crime to be committed.

This HAS to be true, oh please let it be.
Wonder what kind of punishment is involved, I bet it's that the offending law breaker, has to walk around town with the underwear on their head, to be made a mockery off.
Justice will prevail.

Land of the free and home of the brave.

edit - Thanx for the mental picture. pml

Edit - they could start out with just plain stripey pants, and for every mis-demeanour, a star gets added, and when they reach 50 stars they get a spell on the chain gang. They could all be tied together with G-string

Back in the 40's in the UK, it wasn't illegal to hang men's and women's knickers on the same line, but it was very noticeable that people used to hang them at opposite ends of the line (never the twain shall meet)!
People never hung their washing out in our neighbourhood on a Sunday, either, and when we moved into our first flat in the late 50's part of the agreement was that we could use the garden line 2 days a week (there were 3 flats) but all of us were prohibited from using it on a Sunday.

How silly! If there was an old law on this, it wouldn't be enforced unless they were trying to get that person. I haven't heard of any prosecutions but it would be one of those funny stories that would get others sneering at the one who reported it and tried to prosecute it. Is this something you are dealing with?

I don't see why not. After all, they were probably washed in the same washer, so I don't see why it would matter if they were next to each other on the same line. Sometimes I wonder where all of those old ridiculous laws come from.

Don't know but it would be interesting to find out! As you say, the Victorians used to cover up piano legs - that's mental - so it's not beyond the realms of possibility!

Jack H: My flabbers have been ghasted! lol

Miss P: Liked the idea of knickies breeding!

Studstrickle: lol! Boy, have you got one brilliant imagination!

Probably! Have you heard some of the ridiculous UK laws that were never repealed? I've got a whole book of them somewhere - it makes both amusing and alarming reading.
