Hi
I have a 1997 Saturn SL2, yesterday on the wyt home from work, whenever I turned right there was a sound like something rattling around in my wheel well.
I was going to go out later, and the car wouldn't start. The lights and radio came on, but the engine did not click, it just didn't start. I tried again and the car started right up. I turned it off and it wouldn't start again. Then I repeated the process and it would start twice in a row and not start. Again and again.
Do I need a new starter? Any suggestions would be apprecated before I take it it.
Thanks

I would say that the solenoid is fine but the starter is missing a few teeth. Most auto parts stores require a trade in on the old starter. They usually also come the the solenoid attached as a bundle. Ide replace the starter.

It is probably not your starter as that works, it is more likley the ignition switch or starter relay. The rattling sound is probably a separate problem, most likley a bad CV joint.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

I'd check the battery connections first for corrosion, and tightness. (free)

Then maybe starter cable connections.
