There's many different styles of trance and techno. I tend to prefer something with a very addicting rhythm, while some people enjoy something more repetitive or with words or melodic, etc. My personal favorite collection of trance/dance/house/electronica/techno is the Pure Trance, Pure Techno, and Pure House series. These CD's have a variety of artists on them and you can get ideas for more artists and music from that.
There's also good trance/techno on some internet radio stations (ex: www.live365.com, my favorite station is called "ethno techno" and has stuff from all around the world.)
Most trance-type stuff originated in Europe, but you can find a ton of good modern Indian, African, Israeli, and Arabic beats.
If you want a really calming yet energizing CD that's really cheap (cuz it's older stuff), try Robert Miles. I;m also an ATB fan, but not as much DJ Tiesto, although some of my friends LOVE his stuff.

My personal favorite would be the "Hixxy & Styles" happy hardcore remake of Jurgen Vries' classic trance track "The Theme". This track appears on the album "hardcore til i die 2" (cd1 track 5)(Cat# RESISTCD4) , or on 12" vinyl on Hixxy's "Raver Baby" label (Cat# BABY28).
