I heard it taints the purity of soy sauce.

I don't know if it is disrespectful, but it would make sense. Some rice has such a rich sweet aroma on its own, why would you want to add soy sauce to ruin that? The only time I use soy sauce is when I cook with it. I don't ever use it to put on top of food or steamed rice. Adding soy sauce on top of food after it is already cooked is not an Asian thing, it's an American thing.

If you want to flavour your rice with soy sauce no one is going to think bad of you for it. I know lots of people who do it.
