Eventually they would have had to quit, the superiority of the Allied forces would have overwhelmed them but many Allies would have died in overcoming the fanatical people of Japan.

Not as quickly. But the Soviet invasion of Manchuria was set for August 9th long before the bomb was dropped, and once they lost Manchuria and a million soldiers in two weeks, that might have done it. If not, they would have lost Hokkaido in early September, and I think the presense of the Red Army on their home soil would have made the prospect of surrendering to the U.S. look really good.

Yes I do...
I've seen articles that say they were about to sue for peace in fact when we did drop the bomb.
Seems that we made it so why not test it out under the guise that it would hasten an end to the war.
I believe that it was unnecessary but a military trimuph to display the power the US had at the time.
Personally, I believe it to be a blunder that set off the Cold War more than anything else.
g-day!

The dropping of the A Bomb was morally inexcusable, and Militarily unnecessary! AND considered by some to be a war crime'
See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki
And while I suggest you read the whole article, if you are short on time, scroll to the bottom and read the following
"Inherently immoral" And "Militarily unnecessary" Where you will find that many of the scientists involved in the design of the bomb. AND most military leaders of the time were opposed.

no. i was watching a tv show on the history channel where it said that japan set of their own atomic bomb 6 days or something like that before we dropped our first atomic bomb. i think that they wouldve held on long enough to drop their bomb on us to try to turn the tide of the war and have us surrender. the japanese people created their bomb a little too late to have had it combat ready for atleast a year, but if we wouldnt have dropped our bomb the war probably wouldve went on for that long.

Most people think so. That was not the question that led to using the bomb. The question was how many more people would have had to die in order for Japan to be conquered using conventional weapons.

Yes they would have surrendered but only after an Allied land invasion which would have cost over a 100,000 deaths of Allied forces, over a 1,000,000 deaths (not counting civilians) of Japanese and likely the death of their Emperor.

No. Proud Japan (They are proud, proud and unrepentant- even now they continue to visit those war veterans and insist that the war was one of progression, not aggression) first had to face the disastrous results of the atomic bomb.

No. It was the bomb that finally convinced the Japanese war generals that they had lost and the war was over. Historians speculate that while the bomb killed many, its use saved some millions of lives. Chow!!

Yes, but it would have been a year or two later, and many more American deaths. The bombs save many American lives, and that's what counts.
