Until the 1980s, this was available for all mothers to be. However, PM Thatcher seen a good way to save money. She changed the rules and since then, Maternity Grants are only available to those on Income Support and other Income based (means tested) benefits. Those in Full-Time work do not qualify. However, those in Full Time work can claim Maternity Allowance, which pays a bit more than Income Support. The downside to Maternity Allowance is that your Employer has to pay and then claim it back. On the upside, some employers (only the decent ones) will top up the Maternity Allowance to bring your income to your normal basic wage. If you are on Income Support, phone them and request a form, otherwise go to your DSS Office or local Jobcentre and pick one up. If you are employed, speak to your Personel Officer or your Manager.

Yup, you get £500, in two instalments of £250.

Check out direct.gov.uk for more details. I think it's called the Sure Start Maternity Grant.

HOWEVER this is not available if you're in full time work, but you WILL qualify (no matter what your working position is) for a £250 child trust fund. The government gives £250 to ALL children in a trust fund, which you can top up to a maximum of £1200 per year.

You just open up a child trust fund, and then give the details to the government who will put in £250.

you can download the form from the department of work and benefits website and complete and return it anytime after 29 weeks pregnant until baby is 3 months old.
You need to be on low income to be entitled, either claiming job seekers, income support or tax credits.
