Young first time expecting parents we know recently wrote they are planning to call their baby son Loughlin. We were debating how this first name would be pronounced: would it be (phonetically) Lofflin or Loglin or Locklin? And BTW, is this an Irish name? And how common a first name would it be?

Lock-lin would be the closest way I could spell how it sounds, but you really need to hear someone saying the word lough out loud to know what it sounds like.

Jossa just because your surname has been pronounced incorrectly doesn't mean that they should do the same.

The word comes from Irish. There is a village in my county called Loughlynn and there is also a lake called Lough Lynn. As a first name it would be spelt Loughlynn for a girl and Loughlin if it were a boy.

It's pronounced Lock-lin. It's only pronounced Loff-lin by people who don't know any better. I think it maybe Irish, Scottish... something like that. I don't think it's very common. Check the Social Security website and check the top 1000 names page - that will let you know.

craigsbitch is the one that doesn't know any better....it used to be my LAST name and it is pronounced lof-lin in modern times and is the most popular pronunciation. If it is pronounced in its natural tongue it is lach-lin...It is Welch/Gaelic. Not a good first name though, in my opinion.
