Malaysia Airlines Berhad was incorporated in April 1971. In the 1980s, Malaysian Airline System became the first major government agency to be privatised. In 1985, Malaysian Airline System entered the corporate sector by offering 70 million shares for sale. It is now a public listed company.

The 5 largest shareholders are:
Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad 69.34%
Employees Provident Fund Board 11.27%
Amanah Raya Nominees (Tempatan) Sdn. Bhd. 4.67%
State Financial Secretary Sarawak 2.71%
Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn. Bhd. 2.40%

Foreign shareholdings account for only 5.91% so it doesn't look like MAS is much of an MNC.
