There is a small, amateur ice hockey club in Koriyama.
Team name is "Koriyama Ice Hockey Club".
5,000yen/month. Play November thru March.
So far, there are 16 members, 20-60 years old.

Also there is a junior team in Koriyama. Maybe you can be a coach???

No it's not a waste of time at all, ship your hockey gear over. I don't know about Koriyama, but I have played hockey in Fukushima-city, Hitachi-city(very nice rink), and Sendai. Once you have your gear there and are prepared to play, hockey may open doors for you. Hockey people in Japan look out for each other and tend to be well-connected folks. You don't want to be in the position of being asked to play and then have your gear arrive just in time for spring.

If there is no rink in Koriyama (I don't know) just take a trip to Fukushima city and play shinny with the boys there some weekend. If you get tired of Koriyama you might want to move somewhere with real hockey leagues like Sendai, Sapporo or Tokyo. In any case there is nothing like apres-hockey dip in an onsen! Don't bother with advise from people who know nothing about Japanese ice hockey. They don't have a clue what goes on at their local rink once public skating and figure skate clubs finish for the day. Keep your head up!

Can you speak Japanese, or know someone who does? Get in touch with the Board of Education -- they should have a sports department, and they can tell you about the availability of hockey equipment (and hockey rinks and teams!).

I live in Hokkaido, and I know there are several hockey teams here that welcome foreigners -- there's usually some equipment floating around to borrow. But if you like your stuff, you should bring it.

I'm not sure what the hockey atmosphere in Koriyama is, though.

I don't know about hockey but it will be a waste of your time to move to Koriyama. In the middle of nowhere and population less than 350,000. Ditch that backwater town and get to Tokyo and live the real Japanese experience. Trust me.

Depends on how long you are going to stay there. It may be better to rent equipment then ship. I believe it takes two weeks before you would receive it. With all the inspections it would have to go through..
Why not find out if you can take it with you.
