When did this moniker surface and is it a true representation? My feeling is, that as this portion take over the Democratic party, it may drive the more moderate, Kennedy Democrats (which have a higher turn out during elections) to vote out of their party.

Nostrodamus.....Nowhere did I mention communism, you brought it up..as far as your reading comprehension...."Ezra Klein of the American Prospect, who witnessed the incident called it an "odd close" to the panel, reporting that at the end "a young man in uniform stood up to argue that the surge was working, and cutting down on Iraqi casualties."
BTW, this was a "public" event, not a DNC or a Campaign event.....You're reaching. and you still failed to answer the question....

Apparently the left decided that theft of property from productive people and "compassionate" giving to unproductive people constitutes progress.

... The term liberal is an adjective and for this discussion I assume the noun is politics. The use of progressive as a replacement adjective for liberal was the question as I understand it. So the question "WHAT" that you pose to me is ridiculous. My answer stands.
progressive is a pseudonym for moderates that want change for the good. It is being used to draw real moderates over to the democratic party as well as to retain the moderates of the party. The JFK dems. JFK was a progressive particularly regarding human rights.
But as demonstrated by the actions against the man in uniform, some people claiming the moniker of progressive are not progressive at all.
Far left liberals have taken over the democratic party. But they can't win in a general election. So they try camo.
I am a democrat, but I can't stand the far left wack jobs that drive the party. So they are trying to appeal to folks like me.
Frankly it does more harm than good to the party.

In the late Nineteenth Century, Robert LaFolliette of Wisconsin helped spearhead the Progressive platform.
When Teddy Roosevelt was denied his party's nomination in 1912, he ran on the Progressive Party ticket.
Modernly, it means against Bush and the Republican Party's "Stay the Course" strategy.

The term "Progressive" dates from teh late 1800s. At that time it referred to a genral reform movement seeking to curb the corruption and abuses of conservative politicians and unethical businesses. It was adopted by a reformist 3rd party effort as well. Since that time, the term has been used by/about liberal groups to indicate a focus on social/economic change--but has not referenced any particular group or movement.
Today, the right wing is attempting to recast the term into an epithet--believing that others are as ignorant and intolerant of different opinions as they are--but clearly have no understanding of what the term means in a political context. For example--you will see posts that equate "progressive" with "socialist"--an incorrect pairing that only shows how uneducated the neocons who use it really are.
So--liberals are--and have always been--"progressives." So are many conservatives who call for reforms.

the link you posted doesn't say what the guy said - i don't see why they wouldn't lead with that info. for all we know, the guy got up there and started to swear into the mic - but your story neglected to say what he was actually saying - i would consider that relevant - assuming that you were interested in the truth and not just slanting an event to your agenda.
were bush and cheney communists and socialists when they wouldn't allow any democrats into their campaign events - unless they signed loyalty oaths - forgot to mention that as well.
and both of the links that truth posted have nothing whatever to do with communism - but rather some guy trying to sell playing cards.
which is actually a good segue into about how relevant current accusations of 'communism' against todays' dems are.
today's dems are toying with the idea of nationalized health insurance - so fear mongering radical repubs are calling them socialists and communists.
today's dems don't think that it's right for americans currently being raped at the gas pumps to pay those same oil companies taxes - so radical repubs are calling them socialists and communists.
When did socialists become progressives???
never.
it hasn't happened - it's just the latest in a long series of scare tactics that the once proud republican party is reduced to because their leaders and candidates are a bunch of blockheads.
i think it would be simpler for them to run candidates with a touch of integrity than to lie to the entire nation...

I don't think these stories are of any real value . . . The "progressive" movement is similar to the "social conservative" movement . . . both are courted prior to election and dropped shortly after their representative is elected . . . I'm sure some pollster has identified this group of people as "likely" to vote in the upcoming primary . . .
