People always talk about how important integrity is, but don't you think that they have overrated it?

Not hardly.
It entails
Honesty.
Trustworthiness.
Punctuality.
Performance of duties.
Fulfillment of promises.

I recall a statement once, made by a Mid-East business man.
He had contact with a man in Texas, and said this.
"When a Texan shakes hands on a deal, no written contract is needed. Their word is their contract."
That's integrity.
This was a long time ago.

NO! NO! NO! Integrity is of the utmost importance in society. Lack of integrity leads to lying, cheating, stealing; any and all crimes you can imagine. Romantic cheating comes from a lack of integrity. If people cannot be held to their word, society falls apart.

No, integrity is extremely important. But compassion is probably something I would value even more.
But both very important and they keep the world running well.
