It would have to be a floating gear-box/fuel tank. The gear stick swivels the straw box from side to side and as the cow's head (did I mention the cow under the bonnet?) follows the food source, each different position engages various gears. As it consumes the hay the cow produces methane which powers the car. Highly practical and cheap to run I would say.

you wouldnt have anything to clutch at because the gear train would cut it to pieces and the syncro would mesh it up
