Well if you beleive the texts written which I only beleive part of it. I do believe their was a Trojan war only that it was not interfered by with any God or Gods as they think it was.
They lived in an age when everything that made no sense was a sign of the Gods.
But according to legends and that is all this is stories, first Apollo was very offended by Achilles for dishonoring his temple (not like in the movie though it was a good film to watch) and it is said that when Paris fired his arrow at Achilles that Apollo directed the bolt to hit him in the only soft spot or weak spot on him that made him vulnerable his heel, hence the name achilles heel.
Another story says that the Gods could not allow Helen to go to Troy and she was taken away to Egypt by the Gods and a doppelganger was put in her place that they fought for over ten years which was considered to be a cruel Joke of the Gods.
Then their is the story if the Odyssey where you have Poseiden obssessed with preventing Odyssyeus home because he was too arrogant to think he needed the help of the Gods, hence Poseiden kept him away for ten years more plus the ten years of war so he was gone 20 years with his men.
Those are just three stories i can tell you off the top of my head without looking into books.

It's been a while since I've read Homer, but from what I remember, the Gods and Goddesses were forbidden to interfere with the Trojan war, but some took a special interest in one side or the other and guided certain mortals to interfere on their behalf. The only case of direct interference I remember is in the case of Odysseus after the end of the war. After ten years away from his family he was so anxious to get home that he didn't take part in the tributes to the Deities and set sail right away. For this some of the Gods miss directed his ship, got him in trouble, and just generally screwed with him for the next ten years.

Because, Ramon
That's what "gods and goddesses" do in EVERY war
They sit far off from the bloodshed -- carnage and misery
and play games with the destinies of tens of thousands
of human lives -- making comments and reasonings --
being amused and "concerned" about the outcomes of
skirmishes and "progressions with strategies" !!
Then, they hold press conferences and talk about
"staying the course" and "eliminating the enemy"
ask for yet MORE money to pour into yet more war --
then they retire to their $ 5,000 a plate dinners to raise
yet MORE money for their campaigns to get yet more
leverage to have yet more power !!
The lives of gods
and goddesses are NO picnic ---- they're more like-----
a banquet !!!

Influencing events and the weather, they liked to play games among the mortals, toying with them, having facorites, jealous over some slight or whim....they used the sandal clad hoplites as pawns in a game between the city of Troy and the Greek city states.....

How would I know the reason? The books just said they did, so anything that I conjure up as the reason why they did itis just that--Pure conjecture.
You must ask them yourself and then your facts will be straight from the horses' mouth- pardon the Trojan horse pun.

Where are they today? In books and movies. they wanted someone to catch their attention and to hold them so they could teach on how to build a burial tomb or living circuit for their life on earth with humanity. They wanted to live among us and not just be a ghost in our minds.
