I'd recommend Diane Duane's series "So You Want To Be a Wizard" (there are some 7-odd books at the moment, I think, plus an additional couple written in the same fantasy setting) . . . I found them between the Harry Potter books and really enjoyed them, though they are different. You might want to check them out.
Or, on the other hand, if you're feeling a little depressed, perhaps, from all the heaviness of the book, you can always go with Terry Pratchett, whose fantasy books are light, easy to read, and simply, utterly, freaking hilarious. I've never laughed louder . . . go pick up "The Wee Free Men" and tell me it isn't one of the funniest fantasy books ever.
I also rather enjoyed "Artemis Fowl" as a good, original fantasy.
Hope that helps!

Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones.
You may like the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey -- she also wrote some great present-day fantasy (urban fantasy) about a witch named Diana Tregarde, and I really enjoyed The Fire Rose. She also did a fantasy based on a Russian folktale, which I think was the Fire Bird, and that was good, too. Note: most of the protagonists whine about what awful situations they come from, but they all Do Good in the end.
Lois McMaster Bujold is my favorite SFF writer -- her Vorkosigan series is set in the far future, her Five-Gods universe is fantasy, and she's doing some Western/Magic Fantasy right now.
You also might try Jennifer Crusie, who writes romantic comedy. I know it's not the fantasy genre, but lots of SFF fans I know like her work, and I think she's a very funny lady. Try Faking It or Bet Me -- it's sure not your cookie-cutter romance novel.

The Inheritance cycle is one of my favourite series. By Christopher Paolini The first book is called "Eragon", and it's great, along with the others. Also His Dark Materials series by Philip Pulman, for me, is almost better than Harry Potter. The first book is called The Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in America).

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Quite a popular fantasy series which is filled with humour and great characters. I started reading them at the age of 13 and still buy the new ones as soon as they are released. (now 30)

His Dark Materials. It's a great series by Philip Pullman based on Paradise lost. I believe a movie is being made out of the first one "The Golden compass".
