Check out todays sale papers for Circuit City, Office Depot/Max.

They usually have a laptop featuring an Intel Pentium or AMD Turion X2 (both are dual-core), DVD burner, 15.4" screen, 1gb of RAM and an 80-120gb hard drive on sale for around $500.

That's your best bet, modern, but not cutting edge, all at a great price.

You can also upgrade the memory yourself through newegg.com for cheap ($35/1gb, $75/2gb).

There are video on youtube, just type "RAM install laptop".

The top rated laptop is a MacBook Pro, according to Consumer Reports. They rate it for battery life and tech support. You can get an entry level MacBook for under $1000 and if you are a college student, Apple gives you a free iPod Nano. The MacBook comes with iLife (which includes iDvd,iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes etc). You also get Safari (web browser), and Garage Band. And you don't have to worry about viruses, malware etc. The only thing you may want to add is Word or a free version of Open Office.
