Can be 10 in binary.
But according to me 1 + 1 has itself got no meaning. We just draw a straight line and call it one.
It is up to us, what we want to denote with the symbol "1".
But to reduce difficulties we standardize "1" to be called one and denote a single piece of anything.

remember logic in math or computer area
pvq=?
pvq=p+q
true=1
false=0
"or" denotes the sum in logic
true or true =true
hence
1+1=1
Also
1+0=1
0+1=1
but
0+0=0

When you make me have a little doubt about everything I know to be universally true, the outcome is a brief feeling of paranoia.
