Character development. As an aspiring author, I know that every good novel must have rich character development. After all, a variable and distinguished cast of characters contribute heavily to the plot. It's their actions, determined by the author, that continue the storyline to the very end, and it's the characters' personalities that cause them to do what they do and say what they say in a story. Can't have a good plot without a richly detailed cast. The same goes for movies, television shows, and even video games! The characters make the story. Without them, there is no story.
The story's length, in terms of number of pages, really doesn't matter to me. As long as it's a good story, I'm good. And in order to attract me to it, it's got to have a well-explained synopsis that doesn't give away too much of the story, perhaps a short explanation of the story's beginning, ended by the overall cliffhanger of the story in general.

tough one...
sometimes believability is important... like in the movie sunshine I accepted the plot and it seemed normal enough., and then the last twenty minutes a super strong sun dude came on and I was like oh man how dumb
novels, Louis L'amour was a great author because he knew crap that no other writer of the genre ever knew or probably will ever know since he knew the people, worked with em and traveled all over that country and knew it by heart.. he always inserted truthful facts that were little known in the novels. And he just knew how to tell a story, sometimes a story within a story. Except for The Haunted Mesa nearly all his hundred books or so are good, some really good
length no matter coz his short story Big Medicine and Trap of Gold are just awesome

I have to feel invested in the characters in the story. They need to have a likeability that carries on throughout a novel. I also can't stand pretentious stories where the author's Harvard like prose takes away from the story. I like authors to be direct, not use all this mumbo jumbo to get their point across.

The story has to be able to transport me into its world in my mind. It has to move me. Whether it's funny, sad, scary, or thought provoking, it needs to enrapture me long enough to distract me from the real world.
If it is a good story, then I usually like it to be longer because I don't want it to end. On the other hand some stories are so complete that I wouldn't want a word added... even if they are short.

I like the occasional short story.
But I prefer the longer, more novel type stories.
I like them to have a deeper meaning. A romance. And lots of problems in between. Happy endings are nice. But the tragedies are what get me. When the hero has to die.

I like a good story, long or short.
But if it is long I wind up not finishing it. So I tend to just read short stories.

the language, the attitude, the metaphor... etc. are all important to me, but the novel has to say something new or something old in a new way... it has to be different, and that usually happens when the writer is genuine...!
being short or long doesn't matter to me...! lol

I am outdoor person, sometimes I feel like vegging inside. During those times either I read Persian(Farsi) or Spanish Language books(or CD lessons), non-fiction, or motivational stories. Sometimes I read books about native american faith, Buddhism, or spiritual books written by Vethathiri Maharishi, or Bahai books on Unity, Spiritual growth, Aurobindo and Mother's writings on Spirituality or Don Miguel Ruiz Books. Or I read books about Homeopathy and healing. Sometimes I read children's book to read it for my Godson or my friend's kids.
The aspects which draw towards the books are easy language, or stimulating thoughts or story plots, or plain spirituality(which is about learning Wisdom of life).
