Long back there was a news in newspapers that an astroid is going to hit the earth by 2016. And NASA is going to destroy this astroid before it comes closer to us. How far the news and the counter action are true ? Can such a phenomenon ever happen ?

Yes, I saw that show on T.V. It had the ten top things that could destroy the earth. They predicted that an asteroid will come very close to earth on a specific day in around six more years and then it will come around again on a specific day years after that and probably hit the earth. I believe it is true but I think our technology by this time will have the ability to destroy such a thing. They had ten things that could also impact our earth such as....a black hole, a supernova, global warming, computers that think for themselves (and blow up the earth with nuculer attacks we can't stop), mutating viruses that can spread with no cure, and a few others that I can't recall. I think anything is possible and most of them are out of our control.

I remember that story too. I think the update was that later calculations showed that that one would miss us. However they have now discovered another asteroid that will come close enough to us to have its orbit changed by the earth's gravity and then on its next pass a year or two later it might hit, but that hasn't been determined for sure yet, and if I recall the date on that one was something like 2028.
