. Lordy mercy, you've actually had a PB for 6 YEARS? ah, it's 'lifetime' is UP ! I think Sears quit selling them because of all the problems.
What OS are you running, Win 2000? Yup, it's time for a new 'puter. Dell makes the best. I have a cheap Acer that's working ok. Compaq is ok, too.
Maybe you can sell your PB for $40.

Computers don't just slow down for no reason. It's a piece of complex electronics. My old calculator still says 4 + 4 = 8 in record time :) Are you running a new version of a software package that you were using for yrs? Have you upgraded the OS? Yes, like the other fellow said, it could be SpyWare. You can go to this link and get a software to detect and fix it. I use the free version.

In short, computers tend to slow down when it's a software issue. When it's a hardware issue, they stop working all together.
FYI, all the major PC makers (DELL, Compact, Gateway) use the cheapest parts they can find. None of them were made to last. The PC makers hope you buy a new PC before something goes wrong. The reality is Yes, most people buy a new PC before their old one breaks.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Computers slow down as they fill up with crap. Defrag your drive, run the disk cleanup prog-clear out your temp files uninstall old progs you don't use, use a anti-spyware program like ad-aware(free--google it) do your windows updates go into msconfig the startup tab and uncheck the progs you don't need to run every time you start windows.. Too many people have things like Yahoo messenger Quicktime Realplayer etc start up and run when all that does is slow your puter down. Itunes is great to bog a puter down too. The more apps you have running can be compared with the more people you have in a boat--it goes slower. Over the years people add more and more to puters and they start to bog down. If it were locking up or rebooting for no reason it might be a hardware prob but slowing down isn't 90% of the time. I assume you have an up-to-date antivirus prog? I pulled 2200 spyfiles out of a puter with ad-aware once! Virus's will slow a puter down big time too. Your old HP probably isn't dying its just overloaded! I charge $150 up to reimage puters but if the machine isn't worth 1000 or so its not worth it and it would be better getting a new low-end Dell or something.

Sorry to say not for near as long as they should.
I also hate to say that they are considered to be one of the less desire able computers out in the market place.
As of this printing the Dell is considered as one of the top of the line products.

I've seen 486's that still work perfect, though obsolete.
Who can say.
It may be slowing down due to other reasons i.e.spyware etc.
