Does he always have food? Ferrets will self-regulate and will never overeat. But sometimes, when they have no food available, they chew things.

I found this one out when a client of mine (I work in mental health) went away for a few days and when I came in for my shift, the ferret had no food... likely didn't for a good handful of hours, and he chewed his hammock to strings.

That's the only possibility I can think of. No worries leaving food out for ferrets, they won't overeat.

If the blanket is getting stringy, you will have to remove it. If the strings get wrapped up in his intestines, he will die. I don't like being so abrupt, but that is the case. Ferrets are so playful and they don't know any better. Old t shirts make great bedding and they can just be thrown away when they get in rough shape. You can try the bitter apple etc. but it only worked for a couple of my ferrets.

Hmm. Chewing cloth is bad for a ferret as it will damage their teeth - they are usually attracted to cloth that we can hear them chew - like a squeaking noise.

Dont worry about a thing though. It can be stopped.
The most important step - immediately - is to remove any opportunity for her to eat the fabric. You can simply remove the fabric and/or add deterants like chili powder etc. If you can find other fabrics that she isn't interested in use these. If she is eating them all - remove all fabric. She may only get fabrics when you can supervise her directly and stop or redirect her.

You could also try Bitter Apple. Its is used to help nip-train or keep ferrets from chewing those things they should not be. It's not harmful to the ferret, but it is rather unpleasant. With baby ferrets it can be used in small amounts on your fingers to train them not to nip you. Older ferrets may want to play with electrical cords or things they may be dangerous to them. A light coating of Bitter Apple will keep them from these things.

Source 2 has information to train Ferrets NOt to nip.

All the best.

You have one of those ferrets that has to be offered 'non-fluffy' items. You will have to buy the hammocks that are that vinyl-like material and that have no fluff. Try offering old t-shirts or sweatshirts for bedding. They usually don't go after cottony things...its usually that fluffy fleece that they like to chew.

can you remove the blanket and get him a hammock to hang from his cage to sleep on?
if you know it isn't good for him... remove the item and the temptation to chew/eat it
have you washed it... maybe it has a food odor on it that makes him want to eat it...
