The phrase 'to be self righteous' relates to behaviour, which is prompted by the arrogant confidence as though one's own thoughts, ideas or actions are the only right ones, to the total disregard and exclusion of all other ideas and opinion.... it is this arrogance in the behaviour that usually upsets others. If we leave out the arrogance part, it is a good thing since it is rightfully in line with one's own conscience even though it represents a closed mind not receptive to any prospects of improvement or change. I would personally be happier to deal with a self righteous person than with a hypocrite indulging in falsity!!

Commonly 'self-righteous' would have a negative, arrogant connotation as described by others above.
But, perhaps it shouldn't in its truest sense - knowledge that one is egoless and acting for the highest good is the only way to forgive the attacks and fulfill your purpose anyway. Theology and psychology are not separate endeavors.

To be self-righteous is to believe that you and you alone are right ("self" "right") about some particular thing, or even worse, about everything. It is generally used as a criticism.
Such as - "He's an insufferable, self-righteous (favourite expletive here)".

Self-righteous to me looking at life strictly within your own world, not knowing that there are different "worlds" out there for every person. Life is a journey and there are many dragons to slay and only that can teach a person his or her life's lessons.

No, it somewhat is contradictory. The very meaning of an atheist is a guy or woman that lacks the perception in any gods. Atheism isn`t a faith and there is not any in-between faith. Atheism is the shortcoming of perception in any gods.

BELIEVING THAT YOUR OPINION OR BELIEFS (not religious beliefs) ARE SUPERIOR TO OTHER PEOPLE.
It is not even necessary to truly "BELIEVE" that your opionions & beliefs are "TRULY" superior.
Some people present this attitude as a coping mechanism to prevent any type of relationship from becoming to intimate for their comfort. (In other words, "KEEPING PEOPLE AT A DISTANCE AS A DEFENSE AGAINST REVEALING SOME INSECURITY, OR REVEALING SOMETHING ABOUT THEMSELVES THEY DO NOT WISH OTHERS TO KNOW".

It mean that I define rightness. If I think a thing is right then it is right by virture of me thinking it so.

Telling someone that you are so much better than they are. Saying "Well, I wouldn't do that or that......." in a tone that is degrading to someone.
